Every rupee of input-tax credit (ITC) you claim has to be backed by what your suppliers actually reported. The document that shows this is GSTR-2B, and matching it against your own purchase records — *reconciliation* — is one of the most important monthly tasks for protecting your cash. Here's how it works.
What is GSTR-2B?
GSTR-2B is an auto-drafted, static statement of your eligible ITC for a period, generated from the returns your suppliers filed (their GSTR-1). Unlike the live GSTR-2A, 2B is fixed once generated, which makes it the reliable basis for claiming credit in your GSTR-3B.
In short: 2B tells you how much ITC the system says you're entitled to. Your job is to make sure that matches your books.
Why reconciliation matters
- You can only claim ITC that appears in 2B. If a supplier didn't file, or filed wrong, that credit isn't available — even though you paid the tax.
- Over-claiming invites notices and interest. Claiming more than 2B supports is a red flag.
- Under-claiming is lost cash. Credit you forget to claim is money left on the table.
Step-by-step reconciliation
- Download GSTR-2B for the period from the GST portal.
- Pull your purchase register — every purchase invoice you recorded.
- Match invoice by invoice on GSTIN, invoice number, date and tax amount.
- Classify the differences:
- *Matched* — in both, amounts agree. Claim with confidence. - *In your books, not in 2B* — supplier hasn't filed or filed late. Follow up with them; hold the claim. - *In 2B, not in your books* — you may have missed recording a purchase, or it isn't yours. Investigate. - *Amount mismatch* — wrong value somewhere; find which side is right.
- Act on mismatches — chase suppliers, correct your entries, and document the reasons.
- Claim the reconciled ITC in GSTR-3B.
Tips to make it painless
- Record purchases promptly and accurately — most mismatches start as data-entry gaps.
- Reconcile every month, not at year-end, when memories and evidence are fresh.
- Keep a standing list of "problem" suppliers who routinely file late.
